- The young boy's aspect is used to tell the story. The boy overhears his mum and dad talking while they are cooking. The dad normally growls the narrator when he is eating dinner, but the mum says he has to lay off the yelling tonight. This gives the narrator an idea. He thinks he can savotage his dad, and try to make him crack, so he makes a little plan.
- He likes his dad because he takes Andrew fishing, he gives Andrew arm wrestles near the fire on cold nights, he plays scrabble with Andrew instead of watching the news on TV, he tries to do practical jokes on Andrew, but most importantly, he keeps the promises that he makes.
- His dad's 2 faults are that he doesn't like flies, and he likes table manners. He only uses the fly swatters, not fly spray that kills flies. He doesn't stop swinging the fly swatter until the fly is dead. With the table manners, he is very strick with them. For example, he would say if Andrew was slurping his soup, "Andrew, stop slurping!" or "Andrew, elbows off the table."
- It means that when he trys to hit the fly, most of the time he would get it because he has a dead eye of accuracy. He would very rarely miss the shot.
- The narrator's name in this story is Andrew.
- The clue that it gives in the story that Mr Spinks doesn't like kids is that he smiles with his mouth, but he doesn't smile with his eyes.
- The narrator does things to try and get his father to crack at dinner. Those things are slurping his soup, which gradually gets louder, dipping his bread into the soup, and making it all soggy, he drops his bread into his mouth, but the 2nd time he misses, he stuffs the chicken into his face with his fingers, breaking the potato in half and buttereing it with his fingers, he breaks the bone in half, and slurps the middle out, with big slurping noises, and finally, he gets the hollow bone, sticks it into the apple pie, and uses the bone like a straw.
- The thing that get's his dad to crack is that he gets a new fly swatter, and covers it with licorice and currants, and then starts to lick the fly swatter. He chews some black bits and he licks off some chewy stuff, and swallows it, as well as chewing a chrunchy item.
